Solution 01 · Interactive dynamic eBook production

The printed original stays firmly intact,
and comes alive in step with the explanation.

We never disturb typesetting that went through countless revisions. On the same type and layout, figures are drawn in the logical order of the explanation, and when playback ends the page returns to the clean printed original.

Kinefolio
Our own technology that turns a still book
into an interactive one, with the original fully intact

Kinefolio, linear studio's engine, lays a layer that moves in the order of the explanation over your print PDF, without re-typesetting it. Tap a word and that part of the figure lights up; when playback ends, the screen returns to the printed original. Made with Kinefolio, read in Lineary.

Rather than reading about it, tap it yourself.

One page each from elementary, middle and high school maths books, and from six university and exam-prep subjects. All were typeset by us for demonstration. In production we use the publisher's own print PDF. Pick a level and a book, then tap a word in the explanation.

Tap a word in the explanation and only that part of the figure is highlighted. “▶ 도식 재생” (play figure) replays the figure in the order of the solution, and ‹ › steps through it. On the linear algebra and fluid mechanics pages, ▶ beside a formula rewrites the working line by line, and the linear algebra 3D figure can be turned by hand. The specimen pages are Korean textbooks.

What it does

Beyond the static e-book: a page that responds to the reader's hand.

01

Tap the text, the figure responds

Tap a word in the explanation and only the figure element it names lights up. The eye no longer wanders between text and figure; the link works in both directions.

02

Press play, it draws step by step

Figures and formulas are drawn one step at a time in the order the text teaches them, and ‹ › moves back and forth. When playback ends, the printed page is back.

Ask the book PROTOTYPE

For publisher-approved titles, readers ask a question from the page they are reading and move to the page and passage behind the answer. In testing in the reader prototype; the publisher decides whether to enable it.

How we make it

We read how the book explains,
then build everything from the storyboard to working animation.

We do not drop in a fixed animation template. We analyse how that page explains its content, design a storyboard for the figure animation, and bring it to life as working animation. The book's structure and way of explaining stay as they are; the learning experience you want is built on top as digital interaction.

01

Read the page

We read the flow of the explanation and the elements of the figure: which sentence points to which element, and in what order the explanation moves.

02

Storyboard

We lay out the scenes so that one motion equals one step of the explanation. Order of appearance, playback style and button placement are agreed with you here.

03

Animation

The storyboard becomes a working playback layer: the links between words and figure elements, and the play button itself, are built here.

04

Review

We check that the final frame matches the printed page and apply your corrections. Approved pages go into the reader first.

Made to your direction

Not a fixed template: tuned to your book and your direction.

The details follow your request. To suit the book's design, the emphasis of the explanation and the readership, the three below can be set page by page.

Play button

Shape and design

The button's shape, colour and position follow the book's design: small beside the text, or prominent under the figure.

도식
Figure

Order of appearance

Which element comes first and in what order. Following the explanation is the default; an element you want to stress can be moved up.

재생
Playback

Playback style

Play, step-by-step and ‹ › rewind are on every page. What we tune is the pacing: how fast each step draws, whether it pauses between steps or runs on, and the order when a page has several playbacks. It can differ from page to page.

linear studio 가 하는 것
What linear studio does
  • Reads the page and designs the storyboard
  • Builds it as working animation
  • Checks against the print and applies corrections
  • Lists and runs it in the reader
What the publisher does
  • Chooses the book and pages, and hands over the print PDF as is
  • Gives direction on button, order and playback
  • Reviews and approves the storyboard and the result
Preservation

When playback ends, the printed original, unchanged.

We use your PDF as it is. Without re-typesetting, we add an interactive layer over the existing page, and when the animation ends the screen matches the printed page. The current specimens were checked pixel by pixel before and after playback, and every page in real production goes through the same check.

What changes is the learning experience, not the publisher's production system.
You keep the book's layout and editorial workflow and gain a new digital learning product. Proofreading and errata stay as they are, and a new edition means reworking only the pages that changed.

Why it matters

Students do more than read on a screen. They use tools alongside it.

How students study

A static PDF alone cannot keep up with the tools students use.

In Florida's 2022 survey of public college and university students, 13,831 responded. 65.9% reported using interactive practice questions online and 59.7% reported using video as study aids. When figures move and link to the text inside the textbook, students stay in the book instead of scattering to other tools.

Signalling how words and pictures connect was among the design principles with the largest learning benefits. linear studio carries that principle onto the pages of your book.

Word → figure highlight

Signalling which words match which parts of a figure improves comprehension and transfer, most of all for students new to the subject.2 Simply keeping words and pictures together has a clear effect.3

The effect was largest for figures in which the process of change is itself the concept (g = 0.65).6 linear studio uses manim, the mathematical animation engine developed and released by 3Blue1Brown.

These studies did not test our product; they pool research on the same principles. Motion does not always help — so the page moves only when it explains, at the pace the student sets. linear studio is not affiliated with 3Blue1Brown; manim is open-source software released under the MIT License.

What the publisher gains

The same book, now with a reason for students to choose the original.

01

Value of the title

On the same layout and the same price structure, a moving edition is added. The title now differs from its competitors, and adoption materials and store listings gain a line that others cannot write.

02

A reason to buy the original

Interactive figures are connected to a verified account. They add a learning experience that scans, copied PDFs and second-hand copies do not include, giving readers a clear reason to choose the original.

03

Something to show at the next edition

A new edition means reworking only the pages that changed. The moving edition gives the next printing a clear difference to announce, and stays a separate line that does not compete with your existing PDF e-book.
